UPI Big Update from 1st August 2025: Daily Usage Limits Introduced – Here’s What Every User Must Know

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the backbone of India’s digital payment system. But from 1st August 2025, some new rules will be introduced that will directly affect how you use UPI.

With the explosion in UPI usage (over 10 billion transactions per month), servers are experiencing extreme load. While genuine transactions are a priority, repeated balance checks, multiple refund requests, and excessive payment status lookups are creating delays and failures in real transactions.

To manage this digital traffic better and prevent misuse, NPCI has introduced certain daily limits to non-critical features of UPI apps.

These rules will help:

  • Improve transaction success rate

  • Avoid system overload

  • Increase security and fairness


🔍 Let’s Dive Into the 5 Major UPI Rule Changes from 1st August 2025

1. Balance Check Limit – Max 50 Times Per Day

Earlier, users could check their account balance as often as they liked. But now:

You can only check your UPI-linked bank balance up to 50 times per day.

Too many users were checking balances repeatedly, sometimes unnecessarily, which was slowing down core UPI services.

📌 Impact:
If you exceed this limit, your UPI app won’t show your balance until the next day.

Plan your finances and check your balance only when needed.


2. Autopay Time Restriction – Only in Specific Hours

Autopay helps users automatically pay subscriptions, SIPs, bills, etc., but from August:

Autopay will now only be processed in two time slots:

  • From midnight to 10:00 AM

  • From 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM

📌 Reason:
This restriction helps NPCI manage load during peak hours and prevents failed or delayed auto-debits.

Your SIP or bill payments may fail or get delayed if scheduled outside these time slots.

Update your mutual fund SIPs, OTT subscriptions, or loan EMI auto-debits to fit into the allowed hours.


3. Chargeback Request Limit – 10 Requests Per Month

If you make a wrong payment or don’t receive a service/product, you can request a refund (also known as a chargeback). But now:

Each user can only request a refund 10 times a month.
And only 5 requests from the same person or company are allowed.

📌 Reason:
This rule is to stop misuse, especially fake refund claims or repeated complaints.

📌 Impact:
Legitimate refund requests will still work, but frequent misuse will not be tolerated.

Always verify the receiver before sending money. Avoid casual transactions with unknown people.


4. Payment Status Check Limit – Only 3 Times Per Day

Sometimes a payment takes a few seconds to process, and in a panic, users repeatedly check the status.

From 1st August, you can only check a payment’s status 3 times per day per transaction.
And you must wait 90 seconds between each check.

📌 Reason:
Unnecessary checks create server congestion and slow down other users’ payments.

📌 Impact:
After 3 checks, your app may disable this option until the next day.

📌 Pro Tip:
Wait patiently for the payment to confirm. If there's a delay, let the system handle it.


5. Transaction History Limit – Max 25 Times a Day

Some users check their full transaction history multiple times, either for records or verification.

Now, you can only check your transaction history 25 times a day via one UPI app.

📌 Reason:
Frequent access puts extra load on banking systems and slows performance.

📌 Impact:
After reaching the daily limit, you may not be able to view past transactions until the next day.

📌 Pro Tip:
Use your official bank app or net banking to access full statements if needed.

✅ Do These Limits Affect Money Transfers?

No. These new limits do not apply to actual payments or money transfers.

You can still send and receive money as usual via UPI—up to your bank’s per-day transaction limits (which are separate).
